New NZ-US Submarine Cable Planned

Hot on the back of the failed Pacific Fibre cable project, Hawaiki Cable is planning a New Zealand – US fibre link stretching from Whangerei to Oregon.

Reports suggest that they have already signed key contracts with North American providers and have “turnkey contracts with US providers Tillamook Lightwave and CoastCom for key infrastructure and connectivity, including a cable landing station, terrestrial infrastructure, and a new fibre backhaul network that will connect the cable landing station to the city of Hillsboro, near Portland”.

If things go as planned this link promises a 300-fold increase in throughput for New Zealand’s international traffic.
